Almonds are a popular snack known for their health benefits, including their ability to reduce oxidative stress in the body. However, recent research on the subject has yielded conflicting results, leaving many people unsure of the true impact of almond intake on oxidative stress levels.
To address this issue, a team of researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis(1) of all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of almonds on selected oxidative stress indices. They searched several scientific databases and identified seven RCTs involving 424 participants.
The researchers found that almond intake led to a significant decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a biomarker of oxidative stress, but had no significant effect on oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) levels. MDA is a marker for oxidative damage to lipids, while Ox-LDL is a marker for the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which can lead to the formation of plaques in the arteries.
These findings suggest that almonds may have a beneficial role in improving the antioxidant defense system and reducing oxidative stress in adults. The results also indicate a need for further studies with larger groups to better estimate the effect of almond intake on oxidative stress levels.
