Do Protein Shakes or Amino Acid Drinks Reduce Food Intake?

Protein is usually associated with satiety and reduced energy intake. However, in the light of strong evidence, this claim remains unsubstantiated. In this single-blind study(1) of 20 healthy women, 430 calorie drink containing a hefty dose of 52 grams of amino acids using either a whey protein isolate drink(you find these in your supplement stores) or an amino acid blend were given 2 hours before a test meal.

Scientists found that there was no difference between the two when it comes to reducing energy intake and appetitive sensations. Though the scientists attributed this effect to the composition of amino acids, liquid calories, which are poorly structured, usually favor a positive food intake disregarding macronutrient compositions(2)

Taking both studies into account, it's easy to conclude that neither protein nor amino acids on their own reduce food intake or induce satiety, even when amino acids are increased. Foods that do induce satiety or reduce energy intake are a complex structure of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and other nutritive and non-nutritive components. Singular macronutrient-driven approaches do not work.

At Ketogeek, we use 10 grams or about 15% protein per Energy Pod which provides an adequate amount of protein for most people. This can be further supplemented with high-energy or high-protein foods to vary the composition of the diet. As science evolves, we will continue to improve our Energy Pods as well. Go get some!
