We Don't Need More Diets. We Need Better Understanding of Food!

Though diet-based research can provide interesting insights, that's the last thing the public or the food industry needs to create better foods for the future. The truth is, diet-based research in the hands of nutrition gurus and bloggers is only there to generate more junk and sensational information that is aimed to keep the masses hooked on the information. Many such diets have a grounding in ideology rather than scientific understanding and quantification.

The problem with diet-based research is that there are too many confounders and food processing can be used to manipulate the diet to the advantage or disadvantage of the public. This ends up taking the masses from one hot oven to another while creating radicalized diet camps.

What we do need is a better understanding of individual foods and what makes them work. This allows us and the consumer to understand foods and how we can duplicate what makes them work into modern foods. This would require a fundamental rethinking of how nutrition works. Until then, we are going to be stuck with diet camps and poor information for the public.
